About Miss Sheila

(If you don’t want to read the whole thing, read the afterthought at the end)

I am a 44 year old Wife, Mother, Teacher, and Disciple of Jesus. I love God first and foremost and am extremely blessed through Ministering to my family and the children He places in my life. When I was saved in 2002, I quickly got involved in the Children’s Ministry where my experience began in working with children. When my oldest entered school I became Classroom Mom and that continued with my second. I had always desired to be a teacher so I set out on my journey to becoming a teacher myself. I went back to school to study Early Childhood Education, but that journey came to a screeching halt when my oldest son was really struggling in school. He had been “behind” since entering preschool and we became aware of a learning disability when he was in the 1st grade. He began services provided at school during his second grade year that were less than effective and by his fourth grade year he had completely given up on learning altogether. This was unacceptable! We made what seemed to be a very difficult decision at the time to pull him out of school and began homeschooling. By the following year, our second son who was entering the second grade also began homeschooling and our last 2 children have only homeschooled. What a blessing of opportunities arose because we listened to our child and stepped out with a leap of Faith. We were blessed to be a part of founding a local non-profit that offers classes and community to local homeschoolers through co-operative efforts. I remained the Assistant Director for roughly 8 years. Through this organization, I lead a variety of classes including preschool/kindergarten ages, science, math, art, and more. In addition to teaching in a classroom setting, we were also blessed with homeschooling other children in our home and I often tutored on the side. I continue my dedication to children through serving in our church and helping oversee the preschool VBS program. I have also taught at an enrichment center where I had a class roster of 21 mixed aged children ranging from 4-7years. This was a very demanding position where I developed my own lesson plans, curriculum, provided all projects, experiments, art projects, materials, and provided ample opportunity for children to explore Monday through Wednesday. In addition, I taught an array of elective classes on Thursdays, all developed by me, to various age groups from prek-3rd, 4th and 5th graders, and middle school. This opportunity really provided the vision to the next step on our journey. Most recently, I have developed a homeschool enrichment program that you are now a part of!

My teaching journey was not what I expected, but we are forever grateful and look forward to how God will continue to grow this ministry. I have an associate teacher certificate in Early Childhood Education and continually add additional education to my resume. Though an afterthought, I would also like to note that I describe my teaching style as Mary Poppins meets Mrs. Frizzle. “Let’s make learning magical, memorable, and fun, with a spoon full of sugar, a dash of loving firmness, and a sprinkle of self control making it practically perfect in every way.”
